Etienne is a historian of Eurasia and the Middle East, with particular interests in imperial diplomacy, domestic factors of international relations and borderlands. He has written several articles on the relations between Russia and the Soviet Union and the Middle East, in particular Turkey and Iran. He has recently published a History of the Caucasus in the 20th Century (Histoire du Caucase au XXe siècle, Fayard, 2020). His current research focuses on interactions between Russia and the Kurds, as well as on peripheral forms of diplomacy in Eurasian empires.
