A historian of Britain by training, Jonathan became interested in late Ottoman/Middle East history as Principal Investigator of the Gulbenkian Biography Project (2012-7). Drawing on archives located in ten countries and material written in nine different languages, the resulting biography, Mr Five Per Cent: the Many Lives of Calouste Gulbenkian, The World’s Richest Man (Profile, 2019) has been translated into Turkish, Russian, Armenian and Portuguese. It won the 2020 BAC Wadsworth Prize for Business History.
